What Is an RDP and How Does It Actually Work?
Remote Desktop Protocol, almost always shortened to RDP, is a technology that lets you log in to and control a Windows computer over the internet. Instead of sitting in front of the machine, you see its screen on your own device and use your keyboard and mouse as if you were there.
How an RDP connection works
When you buy an RDP from us, you get a Windows server running in a data center along with login credentials — an IP address, username, and password. You open a remote desktop client on your laptop, phone, or tablet, enter those details, and within seconds the remote desktop appears on your screen. Everything runs on the server, so your own device just acts as a window into it.
Why people use an RDP
- Always-on machine: the server stays online 24/7 even when your own computer is off.
- Speed and bandwidth: data-center connections are far faster than most home networks.
- A clean, separate environment: keep certain work isolated from your personal device.
- Access from anywhere: log in from any device with an internet connection.
What you control
With full admin access — which every one of our plans includes — you can install software, change system settings, and configure the desktop exactly how you want. It behaves like a physical PC that happens to live in a data center.
If you are ready to try one, browse our plans and pick the region closest to you for the lowest latency.
