When they are Australian, the case is strong. Domestic peering is handled largely by IX Australia, operated by the Internet Association of Australia — a not-for-profit, member-driven licensed telecommunications carrier. It runs seven internet exchanges across roughly 27–28 data centres nationally, in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, with port speeds up to 400 Gbps. The Sydney exchange is NSW-IX. The point of that footprint is keeping Australian traffic inside Australia instead of hair-pinning through Singapore or the US west coast, which used to be common and added 150 ms or more for no reason.
Sydney is the larger interconnection market and the standard primary choice, with most international capacity landing there. Melbourne is the usual second site and the conventional disaster-recovery pairing, typically 12–18 ms away. Perth is a genuinely different proposition — it is far closer to Southeast Asia than the east coast is, so if you are serving both Western Australia and Indonesia or Singapore, it is worth considering rather than dismissing.

Two obligations land on 10 December 2026: mandatory disclosure of automated decision-making in privacy policies, and the deadline for the OAIC to register the Children's Online Privacy Code. Separately, from 1 July 2026 an AML/CTF expansion brings new professions under the Privacy Act regardless of turnover. The much discussed "tranche two" reforms remain a Government commitment rather than enacted law — no Bill has passed and no commencement date is fixed, so treat them as a planning input, not an obligation.
