Buy Belgium RDP: Brussels, the most central point in western Europe

Belgium's case is almost purely geographic, and it is stronger than its modest exchange statistics suggest. Brussels sits inside the quadrilateral formed by Amsterdam, London, Paris and Frankfurt — the four largest interconnection markets in Europe — and it is close to all four at once. Amsterdam is typically 5–10 ms away, Paris 8–14 ms, London 10–16 ms and Frankfurt 10–18 ms. No other European capital is that near to that much.

If you are serving users across the Benelux, northern France, the Rhineland and southern England from one machine, Belgium is arguably the single best placement available, and it is generally cheaper than Amsterdam or Frankfurt. The trade-off is that you should not choose Belgium expecting a large local peering ecosystem — you choose it for proximity to everyone else's.

BNIX, and reading a small exchange correctly

The Belgian National Internet eXchange has been operated since 1995 by BELNET, the Belgian national research network, and is one of the charter members of Euro-IX. It has around 67 members and peak traffic in the region of 500 Gbps, across four points of presence: Digital Realty in Zaventem, Colt in Evere, LCL in Diegem and Unix-Solutions in Zaventem. The sites are joined by three 100 Gbit/s links in a ring topology, so any single link can fail without partitioning the exchange, and BNIX has carried multicast since 1999 and IPv6 since 2000 — early on both counts.

That is a small exchange by European standards, and the honest framing is this: BNIX keeps Belgian traffic in Belgium, while your international reach comes from Brussels being minutes from AMS-IX, LINX, France-IX and DE-CIX. For most workloads that is the right division of labour, and it is why the latency table below looks as good as it does.

The institutional dimension

Brussels hosts the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, much of the European Parliament's work and NATO headquarters. That has two consequences worth knowing. There is a dense concentration of organisations whose procurement rules specify EU data residency, so Belgian hosting can be an easier sell to that market than a location outside the EU. And there is a correspondingly mature local ecosystem of compliance and legal expertise, which matters if your workload is regulated.

EU membership and settings

Belgium is a founding EU member state, so the GDPR applies directly and EU personal data hosted in Brussels never leaves the EEA. Belgium runs on Central European Time with daylight saving and uses DD/MM/YYYY dates with a comma decimal separator. One local quirk: Belgium has three official languages — Dutch, French and German — so a locally provisioned server may come up in Dutch or French, and the default keyboard may be AZERTY (Belgian variant) rather than QWERTY. Check both before you start typing passwords.

Network

The network around Brussels

BNIX is a modest national exchange, and Belgium's real advantage is proximity to the four largest markets in Europe. Both facts are below.

BNIX

Operated by national research network BELNET since 1995; charter member of Euro-IX

Scale

~67 members, peak traffic around 500 Gbps across four points of presence

Design

Three 100 Gbit/s links in a ring topology; multicast since 1999, IPv6 since 2000

The real argument

Amsterdam, Paris, London and Frankfurt are all within roughly 5–18 ms

Paris8–14 ms
London10–16 ms
Frankfurt10–18 ms
Zurich15–22 ms
Dublin20–28 ms

GDPR in Belgium

Belgium applies the GDPR as a founding EU member state, supervised by the Data Protection Authority (Autorité de protection des données / Gegevensbeschermings- autoriteit). Personal data belonging to EU residents hosted in Brussels has not left the EEA, so no transfer mechanism is needed at all.

The Belgium-specific consideration is commercial rather than legal. Because Brussels hosts the EU institutions and NATO, there is an unusual density of organisations — contractors, trade associations, NGOs, consultancies — whose own obligations or procurement terms require that data stay within the European Union. If you sell to that market, being able to state that your infrastructure sits in Belgium removes a question from the conversation. That is worth something concrete even though it changes nothing about your own GDPR obligations, which remain the standard set regardless of which EU country you pick.

This is general information about the hosting location, not legal advice. Check your own obligations with a qualified adviser.

FAQs

Belgium RDP — questions answered

Why choose Belgium when its exchange is small?+

For proximity to everyone else's. Brussels sits inside the quadrilateral formed by Amsterdam, London, Paris and Frankfurt and is close to all four at once — typically 5–10 ms to Amsterdam, 8–14 ms to Paris, 10–16 ms to London and 10–18 ms to Frankfurt. No other European capital is that near to that much, and Belgium generally costs less than Amsterdam or Frankfurt.

Does Brussels hosting help commercially?+

It can, if you sell into the EU institutional market. Brussels hosts the European Commission, the Council, much of Parliament's work and NATO headquarters, which creates a dense concentration of organisations whose procurement terms specify EU data residency. Being able to say your infrastructure is in Belgium removes a question from that conversation.

Do I get a dedicated IP with Belgium RDP?+

Yes — every Admin Belgium RDP plan includes a dedicated IPv4 with full administrator rights, so the machine behaves like a physical PC in Brussels.

How quickly will I receive my Belgium RDP after payment?+
