Forty locations is useful only if you know how to choose between them. The honest rule is that latency follows physical distance, so the best location is almost always the one closest to wherever you or your users sit. Beyond that, interconnection density decides how direct the path is once traffic leaves the building — and that varies enormously between cities.
Four cities do most of the heavy lifting on the public internet, and they map cleanly onto four use cases. If you are serving Europe, Frankfurt hosts DE-CIX, the busiest internet exchange in the world, which set a record of 19.636 Tbit/s in July 2026 with more than 1,000 networks connected. Amsterdam runs a close second: AMS-IX peaked at 15 Tbit/s in April 2026 across 900-plus connected networks, and carried 35.66 exabytes during 2025. The two cities are under 10 ms apart, so for most European work the choice between them barely matters.
For the United States, New York is the transatlantic entry point and Dallas covers the central and western states — both DE-CIX exchanges finished 2025 approaching 2 Tbit/s. For Asia-Pacific, Singapore is the regional hub with about 30 carrier-neutral facilities and a dozen internet exchanges, while Tokyo is the better pick if your users are specifically in Japan or Northeast Asia. For India, Bangalore keeps domestic traffic domestic instead of hair-pinning through Singapore.
Pick the location nearest your users, not nearest yourself. A server 20 ms from your customers and 200 ms from you will feel slightly laggy to you and fast to them, which is usually the trade you want. The exception is interactive desktop work: if you personally spend hours inside the session every day, put it near you and accept the slower path to everything else. Over about 150 ms of round trip, typing and mouse movement start to feel detached.
Most people overspend here, and a few badly underspend. Windows Server itself wants roughly 1–1.5 GB of RAM before you run anything, which is the single most important number when reading the plan table above.
The 1 GB plan is genuinely tight — realistic for a single lightweight task such as keeping one script or one monitoring tool running, with nothing else open. If you intend to have a browser and any real application open at the same time, start at 2 GB. Treat 1 GB as an always-on utility box rather than a desktop you sit in.
This is where most buyers should land, and it is the most popular plan for good reason. Two cores and 4 GB handles a browser with a normal number of tabs, Office applications, a trading terminal or a couple of automation tools running together. If you are unsure, this is the plan to pick.
Move to 8 GB when you have several applications running concurrently, when you are working with large spreadsheets or datasets, or when more than one person shares the machine. 16 GB and 32 GB are for genuinely heavy workloads — multiple browser profiles or instances at once, development environments with containers, or database work. Storage tends to become the real constraint before RAM does, so check the NVMe allocation against your data before assuming you need more memory.
Sizing wrong is not permanent. Because the plan ladder runs from 1 GB to 32 GB with the same feature set at every tier, the safer approach is to start one tier below what you think you need and move up once you have watched Task Manager for a week under real load. Guessing high wastes money every month; guessing low costs you one upgrade.
These four terms get used interchangeably in advertising and they are not the same thing. Knowing the difference is what stops you buying the wrong product.
Admin RDP means you connect to a Windows machine with administrator rights. You can install software, edit the registry, change system settings, open firewall ports, install drivers and reboot. Standard or shared RDP gives you a user-level account on a machine you share with others — cheaper, but you cannot install anything and someone else's activity affects your performance. If a listing does not say "admin", assume it is not.
A VPS is the underlying delivery model rather than a different product: a virtualised slice of a physical server with its own operating system and resources. An admin RDP is, in practice, a Windows VPS that you reach over the Remote Desktop Protocol. The difference is mostly which part is being emphasised — the machine, or how you connect to it.
A VPN is a fundamentally different thing and the confusion is common. A VPN routes your own device's traffic through another location; you are still working on your own computer. An RDP gives you a separate computer that keeps running when you disconnect. If you want your laptop's traffic to appear elsewhere, you want a VPN. If you want a machine that stays on, keeps working while you sleep, and holds its own files and software, you want an RDP.
Choose an admin RDP for anything that needs to persist without your device being on, anything needing software installation, or anything where you want a clean environment separated from your personal machine. Choose a VPN if the only requirement is changing where your own browsing appears to come from — it is cheaper and simpler for that single job.
