Finland has become a serious data centre location for reasons that are mostly physical: a cold climate that cuts cooling costs, abundant and largely clean electricity, political stability, and EU membership. For Nordic and Baltic audiences it is the obvious choice, and for anyone wanting an EU location outside the crowded Frankfurt–Amsterdam corridor it is a credible alternative.
Domestic peering runs through FICIX, the Finnish Communication and Internet Exchange, established in 1993 and still the country's largest. It is a non-profit operating under Finnish association law with annually elected trustees, and it runs three exchanges: FICIX1 at Espoo Innopoli and the Telia Helsinki data centre, FICIX2 at Digita Helsinki Pasila and Equinix HE7, and FICIX3 in Oulu, with 10G and 100G ports. PeeringDB listed 22 active colocation facilities in Finland as of Q1 2026, the large majority in the Helsinki and Espoo area.
Finland's southbound connectivity is shaped by one cable. C-Lion1, owned and operated by Cinia Oy, runs 1,173 km across the Baltic from Helsinki and Hanko to Rostock in Germany. It entered service in May 2016 as the first direct communications cable between Finland and central Europe — previously everything routed via Sweden and Denmark — and carries a lit capacity of 144 Tbit/s with a Helsinki-to-Frankfurt round trip under 20 ms on the cable itself.
C-Lion1 was cut on 18 November 2024, off the Swedish island of Öland. Services over it went down, Cinia attributed the fault to external physical force, and Germany's defence minister publicly described the incident as sabotage. In the same period the BCS East-West Interlink between Lithuania and Sweden was also cut, and the Balticconnector had been damaged the previous year. Baltic Sea infrastructure has become a genuine security concern rather than a theoretical one, and you should know that before choosing Finland.
Because the redundancy works. Finland is not dependent on C-Lion1 alone: terrestrial fibre runs to Sweden and onward to Norwegian and British transatlantic landings, and submarine cables cross the Gulf of Finland to Estonia and into Baltic and central European networks. When C-Lion1 went down, Finnish connectivity held — traffic rerouted with a latency penalty rather than an outage. That is what diverse routing is for, and Finland has it. Looking ahead, Cinia is a partner in Far North Fiber, a roughly 17,000 km Arctic system linking Asia and Europe, estimated ready for service by the end of 2026, which would add another independent path.
