IX.br is Brazil's national exchange system, a project of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee operated as a non-profit by NIC.br. It spans 39 metropolitan areas, bringing together around 3,800 autonomous systems and roughly 7,000 interconnections. In June 2026 IX.br São Paulo reached traffic peaks of 35 Tbps, contributing to a national record of 55 Tbps across the whole IX.br network. For scale: that single São Paulo exchange handles substantially more peak traffic than Frankfurt or Amsterdam. Meta alone aggregates several terabits per second of capacity there, which tells you it is being used as a primary delivery mechanism rather than a secondary one.

When 3,800 networks meet nationally and the biggest content providers deliver through the exchange rather than over long-haul transit, traffic between a São Paulo server and a Brazilian consumer ISP stays inside Brazil and completes in single or low double-digit milliseconds.
