An Indian RDP makes sense for two distinct reasons, and they pull in the same direction. The first is routing. For a long time, traffic between two Indian networks would often travel to Singapore and back, adding 100 ms or more for no good reason. Domestic exchange capacity has grown substantially — DE-CIX Mumbai alone grew 63% to 2.76 Tbit/s during 2025 and is among the largest exchanges in Asia-Pacific — and hosting inside India is how you take advantage of it. If your users are Indian, an Indian server is not a marginal improvement over Singapore; it is a different experience.
The second reason is regulatory, and it now has hard dates attached. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 was finally operationalised when MeitY notified the DPDP Rules on 13 November 2025, starting an 18-month clock. Full substantive compliance is due by 13 May 2027, with the Consent Manager framework becoming operational on 13 November 2026. Penalties run to ₹250 crore per violation, and the Data Protection Board of India is already functioning — a data principal can file a complaint today. If you handle Indian users' personal data, 2026 is the build year.
Mumbai is India's primary interconnection and submarine cable hub, so it generally has the shortest international paths. Bangalore is the country's software and enterprise centre, which makes it the natural choice if your team, your clients or your development work sit there. Domestically the two are close enough that user experience is similar; the difference shows up on international routes, where Mumbai has the edge.
The obligations that catch people out are not the headline ones. Verifiable parental consent is mandatory for processing data of anyone under 18 — note that this is 18, not 13 or 16 as in some other regimes. Personal data must be deleted once its purpose is fulfilled, with documented retention schedules, so indefinite storage is no longer defensible. And data principals must be able to exercise access, correction, erasure, grievance and nomination rights, which means you need a working process rather than an intention.
This is better news than the January 2025 draft suggested. The final Rules did not impose broad data localisation. Section 16 works as a restriction list rather than a whitelist: transfers out of India are permitted except to jurisdictions the government specifically notifies as restricted. In practice that means hosting Indian data in India is the simplest position, but it is not the only lawful one — a significant relaxation from what the industry feared.
An Indian server should come up on IST (UTC+5:30) with DD/MM/YYYY dates. The half-hour offset is worth remembering when scheduling anything against UTC systems, because it breaks the assumption that time zones are whole hours and quietly misaligns cron jobs written elsewhere.
Indian domestic exchange capacity has grown sharply, which is what makes local hosting worthwhile rather than routing through Singapore.

Typical figures for these routes on well-peered networks, given as a planning guide rather than a guarantee. Real-world latency depends on your own ISP and the path it takes.
| Destination | Round trip |
|---|---|
| Mumbai | 20–30 ms |
| Chennai | 10–18 ms |
| Delhi | 35–45 ms |
| Singapore | 55–70 ms |
| Dubai | 90–110 ms |
| London | 130–150 ms |
India's data protection regime is now live and phased. The DPDP Rules 2025 were notified on 13 November 2025 and carried in the Gazette the following day, converting the January 2025 draft into binding law. Three dates matter: the penalty framework and the Data Protection Board are already operational; the Consent Manager framework under Rule 4 becomes operational on 13 November 2026; and full substantive compliance — notice, consent, security safeguards, breach reporting and data principal rights — is due by 13 May 2027.
The exposure is real. Fines reach ₹250 crore per violation and stack across violation categories, so a single incident can produce cumulative liability well beyond that figure. EY India's 2026 readiness survey found that 71% of Indian enterprises still had limited understanding of the Act, which suggests most organisations are behind rather than ahead. If you are processing Indian personal data on this server, treat the next twelve months as implementation time rather than reading time.
